Robert De Niro and Robin Williams star in this powerful, true story of a maverick doctor and the patients whose lives he changes. Dr. Malcolm Sayer is a shy research physician who uses an experimental drug to "awaken" the catatonic victims of a rare disease. Leonard is the first patient to receive the controversial treatment. His awakening, filled with awe and enthusiasm, proves a rebirth for Sayer too, and he reveals life's simple but unutterably sweet pleasures to the doctor.

With very nice performances from both Robin Williams and Robert De Niro, Awakenings is an amazing film. There are very few and I mean very few films of either of theirs that I did not care for. Most of them I really enjoyed. This was no exception. Awakenings is based on the true story and memoir of neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks, who treated patients suffering from a rare sleeping sickness (encephalitis lethargica) that left them catatonic for decades. Robin Williams character Dr. Malcom Sayer is the representation of Dr. Oliver Sacks.
