Julian Slowik is a celebrity chef who invited multiple people to his high end restaurant. Unbeknownst to the patrons they are in for a night they will never forget. Each person is there for a certain reason. You have a foodie, food critic, movie star, investors, regular patrons and his mother. The kitchen staff is very disciplined in what they do. They start off the night with what seems like a normal first course and a progressive second course. The third course has flower tortillas that have images that show reasons as to why they are there. From tax frauds to a cheating husband. Bad reviews at the restaurant he worked at to horrible movie that ruined his day. The 4th course is Jeremys mess. Now the group is shocked and start to learn things aren't going to go well.
The Menu is a dark comedy/horror film. Maybe more a thriller than horror. All of the people in the restaurant are well off and are are kind of like the I'm better than you. All expect Margot. I thought it was cool that the movie was broken down into courses. And some of those courses were insane. Julian is a truly disturbed individual. After taking time to think about it a little Julian Slowik and John Kramer are a lot alike. John Leguizamo and Anna Taylor-Joy had good performances as well as Ralph Fiennes. Nicolas Hoult was annoying throughout the whole thing. It could have been that was what his character was supposed to be but on the other hand for some reason I have a hard time liking any role he has done. Leguizamo is the reason I watched this movie. I am a big fan of his work and again he didn't disappoint. I expected more from this movie but wasn't disappointed in it.
I would give The Menu a 2.5 out of 5. It is worth a watch but I would say thats probably it just one viewing. The first half of the movie is fairly slow and it does pick up in the end. It has a decent story being unfolded but again takes too long to get to it. Leguizamo, Slowik and Taylor-Joy to me make this movie. And honestly Leguizamo doesn't even have a huge part in it.
The last course was the best as well. The Blu Ray has extra features like, Open Kitchen: A look inside the Menu, First Course, Second Course and Dessert and Deleted Scenes. You can buy it on Amazon at the time of this writing for $17.49 for Blu Ray. If you like this review please hit the follow button, share the page and leave a comment!
