Super Mario Brothers Movie! Spoilers!

 Super Mario Brothers Movie! Spoilers! Nintendo, Illumination and Universal. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and written by Matthew Fogel. Cast, Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Charlie Day, Anna Taylor Joy, Keegan Michael Key, Seth Rogan, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco and Kevin Michael Richardson.

Two brothers from Brooklyn NY go into plumbing together. The former employer Spike and their father disapprove of their decision. In the middle of town there is flooding coming from the sewer. Going to check out how to fix it they get sucked into a warp pipe. They get separated and end up in two different locations. Mario Mushroom Kingdom and Luigi in Dark Lands. Upon arrival they just want to reunite and go home. They learn quickly of how Bowser wants to marry Peach and take over the world. Mario decides to help Peach and Toad to stop Bowser and to get his brother back. Peach helps train Mario in how there are powers in Mushroom Kingdom and how to use them. Knowing they are going to need help they reach out to Cranky Kong for the Kong Family. 

Cranky Kong says to prove his worth basically Mario has to beat Donkey Kong. After getting the best of him Donkey starts to showboat to much and Mario gets multiple power ups but the Cat Suit helps him defeat Donkey Kong. They agree to join Peach, Mario and the rest of Mushroom Kingdom to battle Bowser and his army. The Kongs show them the Karts they can make to go back to Mushroom Kingdom on using Rainbow Road. Bowsers Army ambushes them and the fight begins. Part of Rainbow Road gets destroyed and Mario and Donkey Kong fall into the ocean. They are swallowed by Maw-Ray. The rest of the Kongs, Peach and Toad are captured. Mario and Donkey use a rocket barrel to escape. This whole time Luigi is being held prisoner in a hanging cage above a lava pit. With a very annoying blue star.

Bowser is set to marry Peach and the wedding is about to take place. Bowser tells Peach he is going to sacrifice all the prisoners for her on this occasion. Toad gives Peach a bouquet of flowers which was hiding a frozen flower which she uses on Bowser and his army. Mario and Donkey Kong arrive on the rocket barrel and rescue the prisoners. Mario uses a Tanooki suit to save Luigi. Bowser extremely angry frees himself and calls upon a giant Bullet Bill to destroy Mushroom Kingdom but Mario takes flight to stop it. Mario whips his tail into the eye of Bullet Bill causing him to give chase. Mario trying to figure a way out sees a warp pipe and flies straight to it but pulls up last minutes causing the Bullet Bill to get warped into space. When it detonates it starts a vacuum and pulls everyone including Bowsers Castle and drops them in Brooklyn. Realizing if they don't defeat Bowser now he will destroy NY. 

Bowser starts a medieval beatdown on them. Mario decides if Bowser is going to take over he will at least try to stop him. Peach tells them to get the Super Star. Mario goes to grab it and Bowser shoots fire at him but Luigi uses a manhole cover to keep him from becoming a fried meatball. After they get the star they give Bowser a Brooklyn beatdown of their own. And they defeat the Koopa army too. Bowser ends up getting shrunk by a mini mushroom and captured in a bottle. The Mario Brothers are praised for saving Brooklyn by everyone including their father. Even Spike gives them respect. When all is done the brothers go back to Mushroom Kingdom and begin working as plumbers there.

I personally did not like this adaption of the Mario franchise. I think the story was very lackadaisical. To me Bowser and Donkey Kong are very weak characters compared to their video game counter parts. I think Luigi was the closest to his video game counter part. I do however wish when he lands in the Dark Lands they would have had him go into a haunted mansion as an ode to his own video game. I did like the inclusion of Rainbow Road, Mario Karts, the side scrolling part and the 1,000 small easter eggs. Like the pizza place is Punchout! Pizza and had all the fighters pictures on the wall. The arcade game in the place was Jump Man a nod to the original Mario name. I also liked the Boswer musical parts especially when Magic Koopa wanted to talk to him and they start playing the underground music. Other than that I would give this movie a 2 out of 5. Again there is just so much they could have done but again this is my opinion on it. The movie has made over a billion dollars so it is obviously loved.
