Years after the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Death Star, Darth Vader sends out his Probe Droids to find Princess Leia showing his return of power using the Imperial Fleet. One of the Probes find the Rebels base on the planet Hoth. Luke goes to investigate the probe but before he can he is captured by a Wampa. Luke escapes the Wampa using his Lightsaber and the Force. On the verge of dying from hypothermia Luke is visited by the spirit of Obi-Wan. He instructs Luke to go to the swamps of Dagobah to train to become a Jedi Knight. He tells him to find Jedi Master Yoda. Han finds Luke almost dead and gets them in a dead Tauntaun mount to get out of the weather and try to get warm.
After finding the location of the Rebel Alliance, The Empire launches an attack using At-At Walkers to take the base and force the Alliance to flee. Han, Leia, C-3PO and Chewy leave on the Millennium Falcon but have to hide in an asteroid field when the hyperdrive fails on the Falcon. During this time of tension Han and Leia get close. Trying to find the Falcon, Vader hires Bounty Hunters including Boba Fett. Escaping the Imperial Fleet the Falcon makes it to Bespin. Han knows a former smuggler there Lando Calrissian who now governs Bespin. Boba Fett tracks them there and Vader makes Lando give the group up knowing Luke would try to rescue them.
While this is going on Luke is traveling to Dagobah with R2-D2. After crashing the X-Wing he meets Yoda. Yoda doesn't want to train but after speaking with Obi-Wans spirit he decides he will. He trains Luke in mastering the light side of the Force while resisting all forms of the dark knowing they would take him over as they had done to Vader. Luke has problems controlling his anger and fails to realize the true power of the Force until Yoda lifts the X-Wing out of the swamp. Luke has a premonition about Han and Leia and leaves his training despite Yoda and Obi-Wan telling him not to. Obi-Wan does believe Luke is their only hope, though Yoda says there is another.
Vader give Han a carbonite bath freezing him in a prison seeing how it would work to do it to Luke. Before he does Leia tells Han she loves him. Han survives but is given to Boba Fett who is going to take him to Jabba to collect the bounty. Leia and Chewy gets freed by Lando but not in time to stop Boba Fett. The flee the city on the Falcon. When Luke arrives he gets into a lightsaber fight with Vader. Vader gets the best of Luke cutting his right hand off. While suffering in pain Vader urges Luke to accept the Dark Side. Join him and help destroy the Emperor so that they can rule the entire galaxy together. Luke says no letting Vader know he know he killed his father, Vader lets Luke know that he is Lukes father. Unsure about everything and desperate to get out Luke drops down an airshaft ejected under the city, he barely grabs an antenna. Using the Force he contacts Leia and the Falcon returns to save him. Tie-Fighters chase the group which are almost captured by the Star Destroyer but R2-D2 get the hyperdrive back on allowing them to get away. On the Rebel Fleet Luke receives a robotic hand. The group watches Chewy and Lando leave on the Falcon to get Han.
