Violent Night 2022 Review!

                                                              Violent Night 2023

By 87North Productions and Universal Pictures. With a star cast. David Harbour, John Leguizamo, Alex Hassell, Alexis Louder and Beverly D'Angelo. Directed by Tommy Wirkola and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

Jason Lightstone takes his estranged wife Linda and their daughter Trudy to his moms house for Christmas. Very wealthy family. When they get there they first meet up with his sister Alva her boyfriend self proclaimed action star Morgan Steel and her son Bertrude. Trying to keep the spirit of Christmas up for Trudy they give her a walkie talkie to talk to Santa. Jason and Linda hear her say her only wish was for them to be a family again. Unknowingly to them the staff is part of a mercenary team who are there to take the fortune. They are led by a man known Mr. Scrooge. All the mercenaries have Christmas themed nicknames. The family is shocked to learn that the mom has $300 million dollars in a vault in the basement. Scared Trudy talks into the walkie and is shocked when Santa replies back. After telling him what is going on he said they will be okay and he will take care of it.

This movie was not what I thought it was going to be going into it. I was surprised at how much I liked it. This was a completely different take on a Santa style of movie. I saw this without seeing a trailer or reading about it so when I heard the title I was thinking more along the lines of Silent Night Deadly Night. Again I really enjoyed this take on it.

The Blu Ray release comes with DVD, Digital Code and slip cover. Extras include,

  • Deleted and Extended Scenes (1080p, 19:02 total runtime): Included are Family Arrives at the Mansion, Jason and Linda in Bedroom, Krampus Sees Trudy's Radio, Santa on the Roof, Walk to the Manger, Family Resolution, Bad Dad, Cast Call Back, and Extended Scenes.
  • Quarrelin' Kringle (1080p, 3:45): Casting David Harbour for the specific qualities he brought to the film and the character he portrays. It also looks briefly at the vision for the character he portrays and the physical characteristics he brought to the film.
  • Santa's Helpers: The Making of Violent Night (1080p, 5:56): Looking at the concept, the film's heroes and villains, cast and secondary characters, production design, costumes, and more.
  • Deck the Halls with Brawls (1080p, 6:04): A closer look at the film's fight scenes, choreography, and some of the unique character-based and Christmas-themed antics seen during action.
  • Audio Commentary: Director Tommy Wirkola, Producer Guy Danella, Writer Pat Casey, and Writer Josh Miller gather to discuss the film from a number of perspectives.

I give Violent Night 3.5 out of 5. I really enjoy the action in this movie. I enjoyed John Leguizamo a lot. I like the take on this style of movie. At the time of this blog you can buy it on Amazon.com for $17.96.
